• Complete CV with a list of scientific publications clearly indicating which publications are formally considered peer-reviewed.
• Indication of internet addresses to the applicant’s own publications relating to his/her research (a maximum of three publications)
• Evidence of policy engagement / science-policy communication to non-academic audiences (a one-page summary, or up to three non-academic outputs)
• Names and contact details of at least two references.

Apply through our online recruitment system.

Closing Date for applications: 30 November 2024

We may perform background checks on selected candidates for security purposes.

Condition of Service

The contract period will be 12 months and expected to start in the end of August 2025. The position is fixed term; there is no possibility of extending the contract beyond 12 months.

Salary is negotiable within the Institute’s current salary levels and remuneration packages. The position includes attractive benefits and conditions offered for employees of the Swedish civil service.

NAI is jointly financed by the governments of Sweden, Finland and Iceland, and promotes research on and knowledge of contemporary Africa in the Nordic countries, as well as cooperation between mainly African and Nordic researchers. The Institute also disseminates information on current African issues, through publications, seminars, conferences and various policy-related activities.

About the project

Africa’s escalating external debt has become a growing concern, as both debt stock and servicing obligations are soaring to alarming levels across the continent. Contributing factors include limited revenue generation, ineffective public financial management systems, and external shocks such as the Covid-19 pandemic, commodity price fluctuations resulting from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and climate-related disasters. This mounting debt hampers government spending on crucial services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure, hindering socioeconomic progress and worsening poverty and food insecurity. A new project at NAI will be launched soon to explore the links between debt levels and food security and nutrition on the continent. The project’s findings are expected to offer valuable insights for national governments and international stakeholders to promote sustainable debt management and support economic resilience and growth.

We prefer that the applicant lives within commuting distance from Uppsala.

arbete i internationell miljö

gemensam fika varje vecka

Do you agree that research-based knowledge needs to have a greater place in policy-making? Do you think the understanding of Africa’s opportunities and challenges needs to be strengthened among decision-makers in the Nordic region? Us too! Do you have solid experience in conveying ideas and crafting stories; in audio, audiovisual or text format? Are you eager to develop more of your talents in this area? Then we may have the job for you! We are looking for a research communications officer who thrives in a multicultural, academic environment, and who identifies with our knowledge-sharing mission in the service of democracy.

The Nordic Africa Institute is a Swedish public authority, organizationally placed under the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Our offices are located in Uppsala. We employ just over 30 people from around ten countries. Our mission is to build and share knowledge about societal challenges in contemporary Africa, thereby deepening understanding among policy-makers of African perspectives and societal dynamics. We are researchers, librarians, communicators and administrators. Our main target groups are Nordic decision-makers, Africa-focused researchers in the Nordics and in Africa, students, and the media. We receive core support from the governments of Finland, Iceland, and Sweden.

The communications unit, six people strong, works with publications, meetings & events, web & digital channels, texts, films, photos, and a podcast. Among other things. As one of our colleagues is moving on, we are looking for his successor. Your main task will be to make research-based knowledge accessible and interesting to non-scholarly audiences. For the pieces you produce, you will draw much of your material from interviews with researchers and partners, events and meetings, in the Nordics and in Africa. Additionally, you will work with researchers on presentation skills and messages, and support journalists who wish to use the institute’s knowledge resources. Perhaps you have built your experience in journalism, in research communication, or elsewhere. You are interested in issues relating to Africa and the social sciences (read more about our impact areas here). You believe that research-based knowledge is an important part of policy-making and the fulfillment of the global goals.

Does that sound like you? Then we want to hear from you!

Main tasks

• Produce texts, films and podcasts on topics within NAI’s impact areas.
• Develop and strengthen dialogue with key media outlets and individual reporters in the Nordics, Europe, and Africa.
• Conceptualize and plan research-based briefings for NAI’s target groups
• Support researchers in building messages and preparing briefings
• Publish material on NAI’s website and social media channels.
• Share in building and sending monthly newsletter to institute’s global audience
• Contribute to crafting messages based on institute’s mission and within impact areas.
• Other communications tasks as may be assigned by the Head of Communications.

Education and work experience

• Academic degree in communication, journalism or equivalent
• At least seven years’ experience in telling stories in audio, audiovisual, or text formats, preferably in a research and/or international/development/humanitarian context.

Requirements for this job

• Experience in crafting compelling stories sourced from complex materials or contexts.
• Experience of having worked with subjects relating to the sciences and/or development/humanitarian issues
• Experience of successful cooperation with non-communication experts in crafting stories and messages
• Ability to think strategically
• Very good planning and organizational skills
• Very good cooperation skills
• Fluency in English as well as one Nordic language.

Desirable experiences

• Experience in research communication
• Experience of working in the Adobe package
• Experience from working with topics relating to societal development in contemporary Africa
• Accustomed to working in an academic environment
• Fluency in French, Arabic, Swahili or Portuguese

In addition to committed and friendly colleagues, we offer

• The opportunity to work from home part of the week
• Generous wellness allowance
• Joint breakfast every week
• Beautiful surroundings in the botanical gardens of Uppsala
• Recurring joint activities, such as participation in sports events, cinema visits, Christmas parties, and more.

The Nordic Africa Institute is looking for a Communications Officer (temporary position, 6 months) with a focus on design, text editing and publications coordination.
The Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) conducts social sciences research on contemporary Africa. We believe that research-based knowledge and analysis offer a solid base for informed decisions and contribute to the fulfilment of the global development goals.
Communication and Policy Dialogue is one of three core areas at NAI, and the six-person strong unit works to share the institute’s research and expertise with academic and policy-making audiences in Africa, the Nordics, and Europe, through events, publications, film, text, photo, web, social media and more.
During the first half of 2021 our Publications Coordinator will be on parental leave, and we are looking for a design- and text-oriented communicator to join us for six months.
While your main tasks will involve discussing publications with researchers, text-editing and designing, you will need to have experience of and interest in the wider research communications area, as the communications team jointly discusses and develops methods to efficiently share the institute’s knowledge.
We put heavy emphasis on making our knowledge accessible, usable, and of course highly relevant to our audiences, who are both academic and non-academic.
This job demands some understanding of how evidence-based knowledge is created, and an openness in the dialogue with research colleagues about how to best present and share that knowledge. You need to be able to act as a sounding board to research colleagues who write for non-academic audiences.
As a coordinator of the publications function, you will also handle contacts with publishing and printing partners, manage regular send-outs to libraries (primarily in Africa), as well as actively participate in the launching of the institute’s publications.
Your main tasks:
In dialogue with the Institute’s researchers, produce and disseminate policy notes and other publications; including discussing texts with authors, text editing, designing, uploading publications into various repositories, and marketing.
Together with communications colleagues, promote NAI’s research and publications in the institutes’ digital channels.
Support Events Administrator in organizing events to launch publications.
Manage the logistics of NAI’s publications, including the contacts with authors as well as printing and publishing partners.
Other communication tasks as may be required.

Your qualifications:
Required skills
Documented and extensive experience of designing publications in InDesign
Documented and extensive experience of editing complex text for the benefit of non-academic audiences.
Experience of working in a communications and/or publications function within a research and/or development setting.
Superior command of English

Merits
Fluency in Finnish and/or Swedish.
Experience of producing infographics from complex material.
Knowledge of political, social and economic issues in contemporary Africa.

Education:
Academic degree in subject relevant to the position.

The employment
The period of employment is from mid-December 2020 until end of June 2021.
The place of work is the NAI office in Uppsala, Sweden, combined with home-based work. For this position, a valid work permit for Sweden is a prerequisite.

Mycket goda kunskaper i engelska.

Meriterande

Utbildning:
Relevant yrkesutbildning som kommunikatör eller formgivare.
Anställning
Vikariat, från december 2020 till och med juni 2021. Arbetsplatsen är Nordiska Afrikainstitutets lokaler i Botaniska trädgården i Uppsala kombinerat med arbete hemifrån.
