Uppsala Monitoring Centre (UMC) is recruiting full stack system developers to join our agile devops teams.

Do you want to turn world-improving inventions into successful applications that benefit public health globally? UMC’s technology is instrumental in monitoring the safety of medicines and vaccines, one recent example being the rollout of vaccines during the COVID pandemic. It all began in the 1960s with the thalidomide disaster, which led to birth defects in thousands of babies, triggering a major reform of pharmaceutical regulation. The World Health Organization initiated a programme to monitor the safety of medicines and prevent future harm, and a decade later, UMC was founded in 1978 to support its work.

Join us in carrying on this legacy – as part of one of UMC’s devops teams, you will use your problem-solving, learning and innovation skills to perfect code and constantly find improvements for our applications. We will also rely on your interpersonal skills and ability to be a team player. This is a kind, inclusive and diverse organisation where we help each other to succeed together. If this sounds like you, then you should apply.

Ideally, you are – as focused on quality and finding solutions to problems as we are and enjoy working as a team. You are open to exploring new ways of working (right now AI assistants, tomorrow - who knows?) and seeing how this can be applied in your own work. You are interested in understanding the entire tech stack and application management/operations. We believe you have previous experience in system development and preferably devops. You also have a BSc degree in a relevant field. While we don’t expect you to be familiar with our domain from the start, and are happy to teach you, any experience within healthcare or pharma would be a plus.

What’s in it for you? UMC offers a creative, inspiring, fun, and collaborative work environment where your ideas will be every bit as valued as your programming expertise. We take great pride in our work and our processes, and make time to learn and improve. At UMC you have a 37 hour work week and a generous vacation depending on your age with a minimum of 28 days per year for all and up to 35 days per year if you are over 40 years of age.

This is a full-time role at our office in the heart of Uppsala, Sweden, with flexible hours and hybrid possibilities. This position may be filled before the application deadline, so please apply as soon as possible.

What you will be doing – you will design, implement, and test solutions. Release, deploy and run operations. Maintain and optimise new and existing solutions. Share knowledge and help colleagues.

We know, we are asking a lot – we understand that you might not possess all of the skills listed above or below, and that’s fine. We put more emphasis on what you are like as a person and your ability and willingness to learn. If you like us and we like you, we are sure we can make it work and help each other.

Primary technologies and methods: .NET, C#, F#, Angular, Agile/Scrum.

Nice to have: Azure, React, experience with all layers of an application.

Would you like to contribute to the safer use of medicines globally? We are looking for a physician or pharmacist to join our Signal Management team.
Uppsala Monitoring Centre (UMC) is a centre for international service and scientific research in the field of pharmacovigilance (PV). We manage the technical and operational aspects of the WHO Programme for International Drug Monitoring (WHO PIDM). The organisation is the custodian of VigiBase, the largest global database of suspected adverse events of medicines and vaccines, with 35 million individual case safety reports from across the world.

What you will do
You will join UMC’s Signal Management team, which consists of eight scientists with backgrounds in medicine or pharmacy. With support from UMC’s Research department, the team regularly screens VigiBase to detect safety signals. A signal has been defined as information which suggests a new potentially causal association or a new aspect of a known association, between an intervention and an event or set of events.

Potential signals are prioritised for further investigation in consultation with UMC’s external clinical experts. You will perform the clinical assessment of case series related to potential signals, which includes causality assessment and reviewing the scientific literature for additional evidence. Furthermore, you will critically review the in-depth assessments performed by your team members.

You will also participate in disseminating the findings. Our signals are primarily intended to alert and inform the national pharmacovigilance centres and regulatory authorities within the WHO PIDM. These organisations are responsible for evaluating the information and deciding for further action at a national level. Selected signals are also published in the WHO Pharmaceuticals Newsletter or peer-reviewed scientific journals, as well as presented at scientific conferences.

Aside from the signal work, which is a core UMC activity, you will share your expertise in collaborations with other teams within UMC, such as Education & Training and Research. The Signal Management team also works closely with WHO’s pharmacovigilance team and the WHO advisory committees on the safety of medicinal products and vaccines.

This is a full-time position. It is based at UMC’s office in the centre of Uppsala (Sweden), three minutes away from the railway and bus stations.
You

- Are a physician or a pharmacist, with recent experience in healthcare or research.
- Have a broad medical or pharmacological knowledge.
- Have a strong analytical capability and interest.
- Are proficient in scientific writing, with an eye for detail.
- Are fluent in written and spoken English.
- Enjoy being part of a team and collaborating with others.
- It is an advantage if you have experience in pharmacovigilance or medical data analysis.

You will participate in scientific investigations with a clinical, pharmacological or methodological focus and have close contact with data scientists in your work. We also have an External Clinical Expert panel from around the world with whom we collaborate. You will also help in disseminating findings and research results and represent UMC externally. Do you wish to put your skills to use for a good cause, or do you simply enjoy working with topics related to science and medicine? Join our dynamic, friendly communications team in our work to support a global patient safety mission.
Uppsala Monitoring Centre, the WHO Collaborating Centre for International Drug Monitoring, is an independent, non-profit foundation and an international centre for medicine safety and scientific research.
UMC’s Global Communications department works to raise awareness of medicine safety, establish UMC’s role as a global scientific leader and a trusted partner, and improve communications practices for better patient safety. The department has a dual role within the organisation, where we on one hand drive UMC’s communications strategy and products, and on the other hand act as an in-house content bureau to provide support to other departments upon request.
The department is seeking a social media producer to strengthen the team, which currently consists of six colleagues reporting to the Head of Communications. While each team member has their own responsibilities, we work together a lot and lend a helping hand when needed, so you will have the opportunity to try your hand at different communications projects and develop new skills. The team dynamic is driven by a spirit of collaboration, generosity, professionalism, and creative curiosity. The team members are of mixed nationalities and our working language is English.
Your main responsibilities will be to produce content for and manage UMC’s social media channels. You will be in charge of creating social media posts for newly published articles or videos, products, and upcoming events, and you’ll also work independently to identify interesting topics in the organisation and in the scientific field to share on social media. You’ll work with other members of the communications team to create supporting material for new initiatives or mini campaigns to raise awareness of topics that you have identified. You will create strategic plans for the growth of our channels, as well as provide input on how other projects can best be showcased on social media.
The position requires you to think creatively and approach the organisation with curiosity and a drive to learn about the science of medicine safety. You’ll need to be collaborative and attentive to details. Because UMC works with monitoring of side effects to medicines and this topic can raise concern among the public, it’s of outmost importance that our new social media producer can exercise good judgment about what’s appropriate to share on social media and how different messages may be perceived by different audiences.
While social media lies at the core of this position, you will spend up to a quarter of your time on other communications activities. Depending on your skills, this might include editorial work, campaign coordination, content production for other channels or formats, and giving lectures or workshops on relevant topics.
For this position, we will consider seasoned communications professionals as well as early career starters, or scientists looking to make a career change into science communication. The level of responsibility as well as the paygrade will be determined by the experience of the candidate. If a candidate lacks relevant professional experience, we will look for a demonstrated interest in and knowledge of using social media and online platforms.

To succeed in this role, you need:
An academic degree in a relevant communications or scientific field, or a few years’ professional experience of social media or editorial work.
Fluency and flair in written English.
Demonstrated knowledge of the main social media platforms.
The capacity to quickly acquire a basic understanding of our scientific field.
The ability to deliver social media content on a daily basis, to a set deadline.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective collaborations within the organisation.
The ability to thrive in a collaborative environment where the team works towards common goals.
The ability to self-organise and keep yourself on track even in a remote-work setting, as most of UMC’s staff are working from home during the pandemic.

It’s an advantage if you also have:
Fluency in Swedish.
Experience of using Hootsuite or similar social media management tools.
Broader communications skills that enable you to work on projects other than social media production.
Academic or professional experience from a scientific field, or from humanitarian, non-profit, or international organisations.
International or inter-cultural experience that gives you a broader understanding of global audiences.

Would you like to contribute to the safe use of medicines globally? We are looking for two physicians to join our multidisciplinary research team. You will help advance the science of pharmacovigilance by exploring the risks and benefits of medicines.

Uppsala Monitoring Centre (UMC) is an independent non-profit foundation and centre for international service and scientific research. As the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Collaborating Centre for International Drug Monitoring, we seek to identify adverse effects of medicines based on real-world data – so-called safety signals. An important source of information are the almost 25 million individual case safety reports of suspected adverse drug reactions in the WHO global database, VigiBase, which we maintain and analyse. These reports have been shared by 142 national pharmacovigilance centres across the world who are members of the WHO Programme for International Drug Monitoring.
In UMC’s Pharmacovigilance Science section, we analyse risks and benefits of medicines in use. We do this on our own and in collaboration with experts around the world. We also develop improved or new methods to analyse observational medical data to support wise therapeutic decision-making, in relation for example to drug interactions or risk factors for adverse drug reactions. Finally, we support external domain experts in their assessment and evaluation of data from VigiBase and participate in pharmacovigilance training initiatives with a focus on analysis.

What you will do
You will contribute with medical knowledge and clinical expertise to scientific development and analysis for pharmacovigilance. You will be working with the detection and assessment of possible safety signals in a passionate team of pharmacists, medical doctors and data scientists. You will participate in scientific investigations with clinical, pharmacological or methodological focus. In the detection of preliminary signals and in-depth assessments you will also collaborate with experts around the world. You will help in disseminating findings and research results in reports, scientific articles, abstracts, posters and presentations.

Who you are
You are a physician with at least five years of recent clinical experience
You have broad medical experience (e.g., general practitioner or general medicine)
You have strong analytical capability and interest
You are innovative, driven and enjoy using data to better understand the world
You are generous and enjoy working with others to solve problems
You have excellent English skills and enjoy scientific writing
It is an advantage if you have hands-on experience of pharmacovigilance or medical data analysis

Within the department, you will work alongside our current designer in the delivery of graphic content to the organisation and in developing visual content for various communications products and channels. Graphic design support is periodically in very high demand at UMC, particularly in the autumn when many research conferences take place and a lot of print materials need to be produced, ranging from brochures to scientific posters. During the pandemic, much of our graphic content production has been geared towards virtual events and digital information formats.
In this role, you’ll need to acquire a basic understanding of our scientific field in a relatively short amount of time, as you’ll be expected to generate ideas and advise other departments on how to best express core scientific messages through imagery. You will work particularly close to the editor of UMC’s magazine Uppsala Reports, providing graphic content for the online version of the magazine as well as doing the full layout of the printed magazine, which is published a few times a year.

It is an advantage if you have hands-on experience of pharmacovigilance or medical data analysis
